Constable Hafer was struck and killed by a truck when he went into the road to remove an intoxicated
man. He was able to save the man, but was unable to save himself.
The incident was witnessed by Constable Hafer's son,
Elmer Hafer, who was killed in the line of duty two years later while serving as chief of the Aberdeen Police Department. |

Chief Hafer was struck by a truck and killed after telling the truck driver to move. The driver was
parked on the side of US 52 and sleeping when Chief Hafer awoke him. As Chief Hafer returned to his vehicle the trucker struck
him.
Chief Hafer's father, Constable Lee Hafer, was killed in the line of duty two years earlier while serving with
the Aberdeen Police Department. Chief Hafer had witnessed his father's death.
Chief Hafer was survived by his daughter. |
